From The Pastors’ Pen

Pastor Henry Schulte

I can remember when “summer” included June, July and August. Now it seems that school has hardly ended when pre-school activities are set to begin with band camp, band practice, football practice and then school starts on August 23, 2010. Where did the summer go? Here at St. John the summer has brought some welcome relief as pastors and staff took vacation and some evening activities were not scheduled for the summer. BUT NOW!
We are gearing up for a GREAT start for the fall. The Children’s, Youth and Adult Ministries Directors are getting plans together for a fast start. The Stewardship Committee is finalizing their plans for The Ministry Fair on August 22nd, inviting all confirmed members to make their plans for SERVING through the congregation.

This year the Stewardship Committee is developing a “Plans For Serving” sheet, asking people to make their plans for serving. Then on Rally Day, September 12th, we will ask the congregation members to fill out their “Plans For Participating” sheets. The reason for this is that we want to focus in these two areas of our lives as stewards. Much of the serving is done in continuing ministries like assistants to worship, education and leadership. The “Plans for Participating” will emphasize activities like participating in Friends ‘n Faith Groups, Bible Studies, Mission Outreach projects like Habitat, Feeding the Hungry, Mission Trips, etc.

Our congregation members will develop their “Plans For Giving” for 2011 and present them to the Lord and His Church on November 21st at a special Consecration Sunday Altar as the believers develop their plans for giving based upon their thankfulness for the blessings received. Whether we know it or not, all of us are “Percentage Givers”. The only problem is that some of us do not know what percentage of our income we return the Lord while others do know, having figured it out. The Plans For Giving service helps each person/family to estimate their income for the coming year and then plan the percentage of their income that will be given to God through God’s church.

The Stewardship mailings will come to your home on a schedule. Right now, as we think about the coming year, both school year and calendar year, I encourage you to be thinking about what you would do for God in terms of service, participation and giving for the coming year. We love because God first loved us. We serve because when God showed us what God looked like we saw the Humble Servant and we follow in His steps, and we give to God as a joyful response to His Grace and as an investment in the Kingdom to build up the Church, the New Body of Christ on Earth.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and let’s get ready for an exiting start to a new program year and a new calendar year. God bless you and your ministry.

CORE  Connection, the monthly newsletter from Lutheran Core is now online at www.lutherancore.org. Lutheran Core is developing a new Lutheran denomination. The North American Lutheran Church (NALC) and Lutheran CORE will remain as a "Community of Confessing Lutherans" across Lutheran denominational lines.

As St. John Lutheran of Boerne finds our place in the new affiliations of denominational life, we thought it important that we remember and review what God is calling us “to be” and “to do.” We know that the church as congregation and denomination has no mission other than God’s mission. That mission was clearly presented to us by Christ in what is commonly called “The Great Commission.”

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and lo I am with you always, even unto the close of the age.” Matt. 28:18-20
The Congregation Council thought that it would be helpful for us to remember and review not only our God given Mission to make disciples, but to also to remember and review how the church was taught to love, to serve and to care for others. Loving, serving and caring for others is often called “the Ministry” of the church. On the two Sundays prior to the Saturday, June 26th half-day retreat, sermons focused on our Mission & Ministry and “All-Congregation” Bible studies were held for all confirmed youth and adults.
53 adults were present for the Saturday retreat and we were most pleased with their presence and their participation. The first hour of the retreat was spent developing a Mission Statement. Following good table discussion and participation, reporting, prioritizing and categorizing… the group came up with these essential ingredients for our Mission Statement:
1. Celebrate God’s Grace
2. Grow in Faith
3. Develop Disciples
4. Serve to Christ’s glory

The Council will work to edit those ingredients into a finished statement that can pass the test of “fitting on a T -Shirt”. We will share it with you next month.
The second hour was spent looking at how St John Lutheran Church is organized to carry out the Mission & Ministry. Although our existing committee structure was affirmed, the group saw the need for developing some additional ministries in the areas of Administration/Communication, Mission development, Ministry development, as well as intentional care of members. Groups to be called, “Elders” or “Deacons” were discussed for possible future development. These ideas will be continue to be discussed, developed and in time presentation to the congregation in future newsletters. As ideas about organization are developed and affirmed, they will be incorporated into an amended constitution. That constitution will be presented for adoption at our Annual Congregation Meeting in September.
“Blessed to be a Blessing as Instruments of Christ’s Love” has been our motto and we will continue under that banner. May God bless you as one of those instruments and may God bless all of us as we work to be instruments of his love.

We begin the season of Pentecost with what has been called the “Birthday of the Church.” The Holy Spirit of God comes to and through the apostles and everyone in order to hear the good news in their own language. From that Birth Day, the church grows. The mission to baptize, teach obedience to Christ, and make disciples spreads to the ends of the known world. The ministry to love neighbor as self matures and structures develop to support ministry. During this season of Pentecost we will reflect upon these questions:

Why did God create the church?
What does God want the church to be?
What does God want the church to do?

St. John Lutheran of Boerne will be amending our constitution to reflect name changes in our affiliation at our Annual Congregation Meeting in September. Your Congregation Council suggests that more than changes in names needs to be made to our constitution. In light of the new North American Lutheran Church being built around four core values:

Christ-Centered    Mission-Driven    Traditionally-Grounded    Congregationally-Focused

Our Council is asking the congregation to become prayerfully involved in a brief process of looking at our Mission and our Ministry prior to any writing of amendments to constitution. Christian Discipleship is in the heart of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ as well as in the heart of the development of the North American Lutheran Church. Prior to the retreat and at the retreat, we will ask,

What does ‘Discipleship’ mean for us?
How can we weave Christian Discipleship into all of our church endeavors?
What might we do better or more effectively?

The Council has asked that we find a way to involve all members of St John with thought provoking questions. We will do this on two designated Sundays prior to the retreat. On those Sundays, during Sunday school hour, we will pray, study and present questions that will help us focus on the Mission and Ministry of St. John Lutheran.

Then we will provide for an All Congregation Retreat to be held on Saturday, June 26th in The Family Life Center.
All confirmed members are invited to:

A.) gather for breakfast
B.) hear a focused Bible Study on God’s creation of the church and its mission and development
C.) move into small groups around tables to prayerfully dream and discern God’s answers to questions relating to St John’s Mission & Ministry Emphasis & Direction.

We realize that this event is planned for a Sunday in early summer and not everyone will be in town. Still, we do want to get started with this process. We invite you to note the date and mark it on your calendars. We will need to have an estimate of attendance by early registration for the retreat. After you mark the date on your calendar, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. An Update On Affiliation

St. John Lutheran Church of Boerne is now officially a Lutheran Congregation in Mission for Christ congregation. The congregation ended it’s affiliation with the ELCA on March 7, 2010 when the second required vote to leave received 90.70% of the votes and the affiliation was officially ended when the Certified Letter to the Bishop of The Southwestern Texas Synod was received by the Bishop on March 18, 2010.

Since that time St. John has affiliated with and has been officially received as a Member Congregation of The Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ, a church of some 402 congregations located in 38 states. A total of 183 of these congregation have joined the LCMC since August 19, 2009. Easter: The Festival Of The Resurrection

Holy Week provides the opportunity for us as God’s people to journey with Jesus through the events of the Passion. On Maundy Thursday we will celebrate Holy Communion as we remember Jesus instituting this means of Grace. It was also at the celebration of The Passover Meal that Jesus washed his disciples’ feet and showed them the role of the servant as the model for disciples. We will gather at 6:30 PM on Maundy Thursday, April 1st for worship. Our Lord invites your presence.
