------------------------------------From Pastor Schulte's Pen February 2010Ash Wednesday – February 17thWith Easter Day coming quite early this year, on April 4, 2010, we find ourselves observing Ash Wednesday on February 17th. St. John utheran of Boerne will continue our Lenten tradition with Ash Wednesday Worship Opportunities at 10 A.M. worship in the Historic Chapel and 6:30 P.M. worship in the Sanctuary. The Imposition of Ashes will be offered to all worshippers and provides a way for all to begin the season of Lent hearing the call to repentance and to hear the words of our mortality, words of our finite nature, Remember, you are dust and to dust you shall return” as the cross mark is made on our forehead.
Life is uncertain. Ash Wednesday worship focuses upon the fact that our life on this earth will be completed one day. It may soon or it may be a long time, but never the less we all have a ‘fatal’ condition called “Life”. It is only that as we come to terms with the fact that we will die, that we can truly look to the one who died that we might live and then live life abundantly. Our theme for Mid-Week Lenten Worship for the Wednesdays after Ash Wednesday, will be “The Passion of Christ”. All evening Lenten services will be held in the main sanctuary this year. We had such a fantastic response to Lanne Brehmer’s Sunday school class offering, “Christianity and Islam” that we had to do a special set in the Historic Chapel to accommodate that class that will continue through most of Lent.. (We had 135 register! Isn’t that wonderful?!) We will ask everyone to sit up front in the front sections of pews for these serviceswith smaller attendance. Thus the 10 A.M and 6:30 P.M. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday services will be in the new sanctuary as will all evening services. On Wednesday, March 24th, (The Wednesday before Holy Week) Carol Joseph from Jews for Jesus lead our Mid Week service sharing “Christ and the Passover” narrative meal with us. Our 7th & 8th grade confirmation students (JIF) are expected to worship each Wednesday as a part of their Confirmation expectations. This year Confirmation is scheduled for Sunday, May 23rd on Pentecost Sunday, the birthday of the church. Pastor Henry Schulte |
